Best Buy decides to sell discounted HP TouchPad, still hard to get

Despite reports that Best Buy was returning its stock of TouchPad tablets to HP, the retailer said Saturday night that it would be selling discounted TouchPads after all.
"Due to HP's decision to discontinue its TouchPad product, Best Buy will now provide clearance pricing for all HP TouchPad models regardless of previously advertised prices or promotions," Best Buy said in a note on its forums.
The 16 GB TouchPad is $99 and the 32 GB is $149.

Sony said Tuesday that the company is discounting the price of the PlayStation 3 by $50 in North America and Europe, effective immediately.
As of today, the new price of the PlayStation 3 with 160 Gbytes of storage will be $249; Sony will charge $299 for the PlayStation 3 for a 320-Gbyte hard drive.
As of yesterday, Sony charged $299, 299 euro and 29,980 yen for the 160-Gbyte PS3 model; Sony will charge 249 euro and 24,980 yen in Europe and Japan, respectively. Sony also dropped the price of the 320-Gbyte PS3 from 349 euro and 34,980 yen to 299 euro and 29,980 yen. Although the new pricing will take place immediately within European PAL territories, Japanese customers will have to wait for the discounts to take effect on Aug. 18.

Here’s how to get free cell phone service

Yes, you can get a free cell phone with government assistance. If you make very little money, or you're part of other federal programs such as public housing, food stamps, SSI, or Medicaid, you can get a free mobile phone paid for by a fee on everyone else's phone bills.
This program has been around for years. According to the FCC, the government has been subsidizing landlines since 1984; the program, now called LifeLine, added mobile phones in 1997. LifeLine was enhanced in 2005 during the Bush administration, and TracFone's SafeLink, the first purely free LifeLine phone brand, started disbursing free phones in 2008.
"The telecoms haven't done a very good job promoting LifeLine, and the penetration rates have been dismal," said Jose Fuentes, Tracfone's director of government relations. TracFone operates SafeLink.
LifeLine is funded by the Universal Service Fund, which you see as a surcharge on your phone bill. Established by a 1996 law, the USF makes sure that people who live in rural and low-income areas, as well as schools and libraries can get phone service. It doesn't make a distinction between wired and wireless phones; you can get a subsidy for either, but you have to choose one.

HP TouchPad price slashed by $100 permanently, 16 GB now $399

In a bid to apparently alleviate confusion over the price of the HP TouchPad, Hewlett-Packard has made its previous $100 discount permanent.
As evidenced by the company's Web page, HP has priced the 16 GB HP TouchPad at $399.99, and the 32 GB version at $499.99, the same price that HP discounted it by $100, previously.
That also means that the previous HP.com $50 discount on the 16 GB TouchPad isn't active again. But the new, lower prices brings the TouchPad to right in the price range of Acer's Iconia Tab 500 and the Eee Pad from Asus, and beats the price of the iPad 2 by $100.
